경기도 고양시 덕양구의 고요한 산사에서 오는 2026년 9월 3일 오후 2시, 한국 최초의 불교 패션쇼가 열린다. 이번 행사는 한국뉴욕주립대학교 패션디자인과 정재만 교수와 천연염색 자연닮 클럽이 공동 주최하며, 불교의 전통 의복과 색채, 사찰 문화를 현대 패션으로 재해석한 ‘K-불교 패션’을 세계에 알리는 것을 목표로 한다.
행사는 사물놀이, 천연염색 퍼포먼스, 요가 명상, 패션쇼가 어우러지는 형태로 진행된다. 특히 정재만 교수가 직접 선보이는 대형 붓 퍼포먼스는 이번 쇼의 하이라이트로, 붓을 쓰는 순간의 찰나를 시각적으로 표현해 관객들에게 자연의 색이 살아 숨 쉬는 장면을 선사할 예정이다.

정 교수는 “이번 행사는 불교를 단순히 재현하는 패션쇼가 아니라, 한국 불교의 정신과 전통을 현대 패션 언어로 재해석하는 실험”이라며 “불교문화와 천연염색이 세계가 주목할 수 있는 새로운 K-패션 콘텐츠가 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.
이번 패션쇼는 불교적 가치와 자연 친화적 소재를 결합해 지속가능한 패션의 가능성을 보여줄 것으로 기대된다. 행사 규모는 크지 않지만, ‘사찰이 패션쇼로 변한다’는 발상의 전환 자체가 한국 패션계에 신선한 자극을 줄 것으로 평가된다.

Korea’s First ‘Buddhist Fashion Show,’ Temple Becomes the Runway
On September 3, 2026, at 2:00 PM, Korea’s first-ever Buddhist Fashion Show will be held at a serene temple in Deogyang-gu, Goyang-si, Gyeonggi Province. The event is jointly organized by Professor Jae-Man Jung of the Fashion Design Department at SUNY Korea and the Natural Dye Club, aiming to introduce “K-Buddhist Fashion” to the world by reinterpreting traditional Buddhist attire, colors, and temple culture through modern fashion.
The program will feature samulnori (traditional percussion performance), a natural dye performance, yoga meditation, and a fashion show. A highlight of the event will be Professor Jung’s large-scale brush performance, visually capturing the fleeting moment of brush strokes and presenting audiences with the vivid colors of nature.
Professor Jung stated, “This event is not simply a reproduction of Buddhist fashion, but an experiment in reinterpreting the spirit and tradition of Korean Buddhism through the language of modern fashion. Buddhist culture and natural dyeing will become new K-fashion content that the world can pay attention to.”
The show is expected to demonstrate the potential of sustainable fashion by combining Buddhist values with eco-friendly materials. Although modest in scale, the very idea of transforming a temple into a fashion runway is seen as a refreshing innovation for Korea’s fashion industry.
