경기도 고양시 덕양구 소재의 주천사에서 오는 9월 3일 오후 2시, 런웨이로 변신한다. 한국뉴욕주립대학교 패션디자인과 정재만 교수와 천연염색 동호회 자연닮(회장 주미연)이 공동 주최하며 삼육대학교 시니어모델과 한국뉴욕주립대학교 인천시민대학 천연염색 심화과정 학생들이 참여하는 한국 최초의 ‘불교 패션쇼’가 개최되는 것이다.

이날 패션쇼는 천연염색 심화과정 윤경원(한국패션예술인협회 부회장), 임지수(한복패션모델)가 숯과 쪽(인디고)으로 물들인 의상과 천연염색 스카프를 이용하여 자연의 색이 패션이 되는 연출로 한국적 K-패션문화의 가능성을 보여줄 예정이다.

이번 행사는 불교문화와 현대 패션을 결합해 전통 승복과 불교 색채를 현대적으로 재해석한 ‘K-불교 패션’을 선보인다. 천연 염색을 활용한 의상과 함께 사물놀이, 대형 붓 퍼포먼스, 요가, 영상 상영 등 다양한 프로그램이 마련되어 관람객들에게 오감으로 느낄 수 있는 특별한 경험을 제공할 예정이다.

정재만 교수는 “자연과 정신, 그리고 패션이 조화를 이루는 새로운 문화 콘텐츠를 통해 한국 불교문화가 세계에 소개되길 바란다”고 밝혔다. 이번 패션쇼는 불교문화, 패션, 천연염색에 관심 있는 누구나 무료로 참여할 수 있다.

행사 장소는 덕양구 홍로토 417번길에 위치한 사찰이며, 이번 시도는 한국 전통문화와 현대 패션의 융합을 통해 글로벌 무대에서 새로운 문화적 가치를 창출하려는 의미 있는 도전으로 평가된다.

On September 3 at 2 p.m., Juchunsa Temple in Deogyang-gu, Goyang-si, will transform into a runway. Korea’s first “Buddhist Fashion Show” will be held, jointly organized by Professor Jung Jae-man of the Fashion Design Department at SUNY Korea and the natural dyeing club Nature-Dam (President Joo Mi-yeon). Senior models from Sahmyook University and students from SUNY Korea’s Incheon Citizen College advanced natural dyeing course will also participate.

On this day, Yoon Kyung-won (Vice President of the Korea Fashion Artists Association) and Lim Ji-soo(Hanbok fashion model) will present clothing and scarves dyed with charcoal and indigo, showcasing how the colors of nature can become fashion and highlighting the potential of a uniquely Korean K-fashion culture.

The event will combine Buddhist culture with modern fashion, reinterpreting traditional monastic robes and Buddhist color symbolism into contemporary “K-Buddhist Fashion.” Alongside naturally dyed garments, programs such as samulnori , large brush calligraphy, yoga, and video screenings will provide audiences with a multi-sensory experience.

Professor Jung Jae-man remarked, “Through new cultural content that harmonizes nature, spirit, and fashion, I hope Korean Buddhist culture will be introduced to the world.” The fashion show is free and open to anyone interested in Buddhist culture, fashion, or natural dyeing.

The venue is Juchunsa Temple, located on Hongroto 417beon-gil in Deogyang-gu. This pioneering attempt is regarded as a meaningful challenge to create new cultural value on the global stage by merging Korean traditional culture with modern fashion.
